There was a time when Sunday afternoons had no purpose. Shops were closed. Emails didn’t exist. Telephones stayed silent. Time seemed to slow down on its own, and nobody felt the need to justify doing very little.
Anthropologists often describe these moments as “social pauses”. They weren’t designed to be productive. They simply existed between the obligations of one week and the beginning of the next.
Somewhere along the way, we lost that pause.
Sunday became another day to optimise.
Brunches, shopping, sports, errands, catching up, preparing for Monday… even rest became something we learned to schedule.
Perhaps that is why a quiet Sunday afternoon feels almost unfamiliar today.
Not because we have forgotten how to relax.
Because we have forgotten that doing nothing is not the same as wasting time.
A place like a bar has always offered something unusual.
Not an activity.
Not a task.
Simply somewhere to exist for a while.
To have a drink.
To meet someone.
Or to meet nobody at all.
To leave after thirty minutes.
Or still be there when the afternoon quietly becomes evening.
Maybe that is what NO RUSH is really about.
Allowing a few hours to belong to nobody but yourself.
