There is an interesting paradox about modern life. We have never had so many tools designed to save time, yet we constantly feel like we don’t have enough of it.
Every minute has become measurable. Every journey optimised. Every evening planned. Even leisure has quietly adopted the language of productivity. We arrive at a certain time because it is cheaper. We leave at a certain time because tomorrow starts early. We check our phones to see what time it is, only to realise that we’ve stopped paying attention to the people standing in front of us.
Anthropologists often describe this as one of the defining characteristics of contemporary societies: our relationship with time has shifted. We no longer simply experience it, we manage it.
Nightlife has always resisted that logic.
For centuries, the night has been one of the rare moments where time becomes less predictable. You don’t always know who you’ll meet. A conversation can begin without warning. One drink becomes three. You decide to head home, then someone walks through the door and the evening quietly changes direction.
The best nights have always had one thing in common.
They refused to follow a schedule.
