Long before clothing became fashion, the body was already a canvas.
People covered themselves with ochre, ash, charcoal or clay. They painted their skin for ceremonies, celebrations, mourning, desire or simply to belong. The body was never just something we inhabited. It was something we transformed.
Anthropologists have long observed that every culture leaves its mark on the body.
Not to hide it.
To tell a story.
Today, we spend an extraordinary amount of time looking at bodies.
On screens.
In advertisements.
On social media.
We compare them, judge them and often imagine they exist to be evaluated.
Perhaps we have forgotten something.
A body is not primarily an image.
It is an experience.
It breathes before it poses.
It feels before it performs.
It remembers every touch long after a photograph has disappeared. Maybe that is why places where bodies simply coexist still matter. Not because they ask us to look. But because they remind us what it feels like to be present.
Without filters.
Without performances.
Without rushing to become someone else.
For a few hours, that is enough.
