Les Volumineuses were born out of a stark realization.
Those subjected to sexism* are notably underrepresented in the Belgian music sector, both on stage and behind the scenes. Often censored, insufficiently acknowledged, and inadequately promoted, they may be in the majority in educational settings, but become a minority in the job market, positions of responsibility, decision-making roles, and as headliners at festivals.
Adopting an inclusive and intersectional feminist stance (considering the interaction of multiple discriminations), the initiative aims to provide space and visibility for those facing various forms of discrimination based on gender, ethnic origin, physical condition, religion or spirituality, sexual orientation, social class, etc. Anchoring events in different neighborhoods of the capital facilitates reaching diverse audiences, representative of the cultural and social richness that organizers are eager to highlight.
The goal is to showcase gendered artists by providing them with an expressive space that contributes to increasing their visibility in a festive, safe, and caring environment for everyone.
The organizers have developed a concept of micro-festivals that are both chill and explosive. Two to three times a year, the public hears about the Volumes! Each edition has its own lineup, venue, and atmosphere. The events feature shows, activities, concerts, and DJ sets. The Safe stand, a vital organ, is always present to ensure that everyone can enjoy themselves safely. Sometimes, collaborations with other collectives happen because together, they make even more noise!
Festive, secure, and inclusive are the guiding principles of these events.
What does the term “gendered” mean?
Individuals who are victims of sexism, such as cisgender women, transgender individuals, non-binary people, and members of the LGBTQIA+ community. Victims of sexism are numerous, experiencing oppression and exclusion because they do not conform to the norms imposed by a heteronormative patriarchal society. These discriminations are embedded in a capitalist system that provides fertile ground for the domination of certain individuals over others. Therefore, the organizers choose to fight for another system that involves those currently discriminated against based on their gender.
