We spend a remarkable amount of time learning how to look at our own bodies from the outside.
We compare them to photographs, measurements, ideals and expectations. We identify what should be improved, hidden, trained, shaved, enlarged or reduced. Even confidence is often presented as another task to complete, as though loving your body were a final achievement reserved for the moment when it had become acceptable enough.
But the body is not a project waiting to be finished.
It is the place from which we experience everything: pleasure, fatigue, warmth, hesitation, desire, intimacy and movement. Long before it becomes visible to anyone else, it is already ours to inhabit. Perhaps that is why showing affection towards our own body can still feel strangely transgressive. We are accustomed to seeking approval from others, but less accustomed to granting it to ourselves. We know how to ask whether someone finds us attractive. We are rarely encouraged to ask whether we enjoy being the person we already are.
At Stamm, we often say that all bodies are sexy.
Not because all bodies look the same, nor because differences should be politely ignored. Quite the opposite. Bodies carry age, history, habits, vulnerability, confidence and experience. What makes them desirable is not their proximity to a single ideal, but their capacity to be alive, expressive and present.
Loving your body does not require believing it is perfect.
It may simply mean no longer postponing affection until it changes.
This Sunday, take your time.
Come with the body you have, not the one you have promised yourself you might have later.
